The shelter provides care and support for street dogs and cats who need food, are injured, or who have been abandoned on the street. Providing food and care entails a great deal of expense. As we have limited resources, we rely on the generosity of our community to make a difference.

Who is doing the work ?

Hello, my name is Fatma Şeren and I have been rescuing animals since I was a little girl.

People often ask me why I am so fond of our angels with paws. Well, I grew up poor and used to eat with the cats and dogs.

We were happy together as all they wanted was a bite of food, a mouthful of water and a lot of love. I’ve always loved animals; I will always save them until I die.

Fatma's Story

I grew up in Samsun on the Black Sea coast of Türkiye. Even though we were poor, my family looked after street animals so I guess you can say that I had a good example. I moved to Kocaeli Province and then to Iznik with my husband, bringing 65 dogs with us.

With a small inheritance we bought a small piece of land outside Iznik where we created a shelter for dogs and cats. From the original 65 dogs the number at the shelter has grown to around 250 dogs and cats.

I spend the mornings cleaning the shelter and tending the needs of the dogs, then I collect unused food from schools and institutions, supplement that with dry dog food and distribute it to the 250 dogs at the shelter and another 50 dogs and cats living in the outskirts of Iznik.

To feed the street dogs and those in the shelter I use about 75 kg (165 lbs) of dry food a day. When I return in the late afternoon, I again clean the shelter and cuddle as many of them as I can.
